War Studies Research Reports No. 8As the world’s only superpower, the United States uses its vast military power as an instrument for an active global policy. New American concepts and doctrines are constantly evolving. Doctrinal Transformation: US Strategic Doctrine, 2001-2004 provides a survey of this field. In the study, the doctrinal development is placed in the context of American use if force doctrines and defense transformation, and is analyzed from the perspective of military theory.An analysis of American military thought is essential for the understanding of the post-9/11 security environment. Such an analysis is also important as a basis for Swedish security policy, defense transformation, participation in international operations, and doctrinal development.
